Van Jones: Chuck Schumer in Blast Radius of ‘Volcanic Eruption’ of Anger from Dems After Helping Republicans
CNN’s Van Jones said Friday that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is on the outs with his fellow Democrats after helping Republicans pass a spending bill to fund the government for the next six months.
On Thursday, the New York Democrat drew the ire of House Democrats and many of his peers in the Senate when he said he would help advance a continuing resolution endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Many in the House were prepared to shut down the government to bring the GOP to the negotiating table. They will not have the chance after Schumer found enough support in the upper chamber Friday to keep the lights.
Senate Democrats did so without concessions many in the party would have preferred.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries dodged a question about Schumer during a Friday afternoon press conference. Hours later, Jones told CNN anchor Erin Burnett that Schumer “misread” the political stakes of helping Trump and would likely pay a hefty price.
Burnett asked, “Van, how angry are Democrats at Leader Schumer?”
Jones replied, “I’ve never seen this level of volcanic anger at a Democrat, ever.” Speaking on behalf of frustrated Democrats, Jones concluded:
We can be grumpy. We can be frustrated with each other, there is a volcanic eruption of outrage at leader Schumer because we want a Mitch McConnell. I remember when Obama had all the cards, Mitch McConnell drove Obama nuts, twisted his pinky, broke his kneecaps, and got stuff done for Republicans when they shouldn’t have gotten an inch, they got miles.
We have a Senate majority leader who is beloved in this party, but we want somebody who’s gonna stand up to this bully. Stand up to this bully. Do something. And if you shut the government down and it gets a little bit crazy, at least some politics is about the rationality. There’s an emotional need to stop Donald Trump and Elon Musk from running over this party. And I think Chuck Schumer has radically misread the room.
