‘What an A**hole This Guy Is!’ JD Vance Takes Faux Umbrage at Being Called ‘An Intellectual’

Vice President JD Vance did not entirely appreciate being called “an intellectual” while attending a swanky gathering in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday night.

The event was hosted by American Compass, a conservative think tank whose founder, Oren Cass, interviewed the vice president at the black tie event. Cass began the discussion by noting that Vance had written for the National Review. Back then, the future vice president was very much opposed to President Donald Trump. However, Vance has shown how quickly things can change, as in just a few short years, he secured Trump’s endorsement for Senate in 2022 before being tapped to be the Republican vice presidential nominee last year.

“We are thrilled to have you here,” Cass began. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to talk with you and so grateful that the work you’re doing and, in a sense, so in awe of it because there are politicians out there who are– they’ve just been politicians. But you are someone who was an intellectual first. Some people don’t like the word ‘intellectual.’ But I mean it in the good sense of the term. You were writing for National Review. You were at the bar late at night arguing about and helping shape these ideas that you are now–”

Vance interrupted and took faux umbrage at Cass’s preface.

“I come here for free and you insult me,” the vice president cracked. “And you call me ‘an intellectual,’ remind me that I wrote for National Review. What an asshole this guy is!”

The audience clapped, and Cass replied, “That’s fair. I will admit that I, too, wrote for National Review.”
