Dem lawmaker Claims A Second Trump Term Would ‘Look A Lot Like Vladimir Putin in Russia’
Rep. Jamie Raskin claimed that if former President Donald Trump regained office his second term would “look a lot like Vladimir Putin in Russia.”
Raskin joined MSNBC host Jen Psaki for an interview on her Sunday show where discussed the possible dangers of having Trump back in office, comparing the hypothetical reality to the governments of Hungary and Russia.
In recent interviews, social media posts, and rally speeches, Trump has increased his rhetoric and calls to arrest political rivals, deport undocumented workers, and go after the “deep state” if he regains the White House in 2024. Trump is facing four criminal indictments for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents.
Psaki, a former White House press secretary for President Joe Biden, asked Raskin if he believes Trump’s “authoritarian impulses [are] getting worse.”
“Well, the role of the government, in his view, is to advance his political fortunes and destroy his political enemies. So what would a second term look like? It would look a lot like Vladimir Putin and Russia,” Raskin responded.
He also compared a possible second term to the “illiberal democracy” of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, adding ”
They don’t accept elections. They don’t go their ways. They refuse to disavow political violence. They embrace political violence as an instrument for obtaining power. And then everything flows from the will of a charismatic politician, and that is Donald Trump in their book. So we are clearly headed into a completely different form of government than any of us would recognize as continuous with the past right wing authoritarian government in league with Putin, Xi, Orban, Bolsonaro.
Trump and Biden are currently neck-and-neck in the polls as both candidates appear as the likely nominees for both their respective primaries, according to Real Clear Politics.
