Sen. Chuck Grassley, 88, Announces He’s Running for Re-Election

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), 88, has announced that he will run in 2022 for re-election to an eighth Senate term.
“It’s 4 a.m. in Iowa so I’m running. I do that 6 days a week. Before I start the day I want you to know what Barbara and I have decided,” stated Grassley in an early Friday morning Twitter post. I’m running for re-election—a lot more to do, for Iowa. We ask and will work for your support. Will you join us?”

Grassley, who has been in the Senate since 1981 and in Congress overall since 1975, is the oldest Republican senator.
Grassley’s Senate career has consisted of being the chairman of numerous committees including of the Judiciary Committee, where he oversaw the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, the latter of whom was baselessly accused of sexual misconduct and, as a result, had an extra hearing over the allegations in what was a highly contentious nomination. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh were confirmed in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
A few Democrats have announced their run for Senate. Polling shows Grassley comfortably leading the most prominent Democratic candidate, former Rep. Abby Finkenauer.
