‘Absolutely, 100%’: Former FBI Agent Confirms That Comey Is the Memo-Writing Type
Tonight on MSNBC, Rachel Maddow spoke to a 25-year veteran of the FBI who, like former director James Comey, is now just a regular ol’ private citizen.
Speaking of Comey, the former agent knew him pretty well. In fact, Maddow wasted no time in asking Frank Montoya if the reports that Comey kept detailed written memos about his interaction with the president might be true. For those of you just tuning in, of course, reports surfaced today that a supposed memo written by Comey implicates Donald Trump in possible obstruction of justice by claiming he asked Comey to halt the investigation into Mike Flynn‘s possible ties to Russia. The Flynn investigation was not halted and Trump fired Comey last week, so you can see why this is a big deal.
Anyway, Montoya said that Comey is “absolutely, 100%” the sort who keeps written records of everything.
He deepened his explanation with, “We have a rule of them — a sacred writ, even — that we always teach our young folks: If it happened and you didn’t write it down, it didn’t happen.”
As for how Comey might have made his memos, Montoya said they could have been handwritten or electronic, depending on what the meetings he was chronicling themselves were like. He shared his assurance that the notes will still be in the FBI’s system and will be available for subpoena in the event charges are pursued.
And we already know that Jason Chaffetz has his subpoena pen ready.
