Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Hits Back at GOP Criticism of Green New Deal: ‘People are Dying!’
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Green New Deal resolution that she helped co-author has been something a consistent target of ridicule for both Republican members of Congress and conservative hosts and analysts on Fox News.
But the recently elected Democratic rep from New York recently gave as good as she got in a passionate rebuttal of Republican criticism. The impassioned speech during a hearing held by the House Committee on Financial Services on which Ms. Ocasio-Cortez serves.
“You want to tell people that their desire for clean air and clean water is elitist?” Ocasio-Cortez passionately exclaimed, adding “tell that to the kids in the South Bronx which are suffering from the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country.”
She then cited kids of Flint, Michigan who have raised levels of lead in their bloodstream due to old and inadequate plumbing, adding “You’re telling those kids that they are trying to get on a plane to Davos? People are dying!”

“We talk about cost—we’re going to pay for this whether we pass a Green New Deal or not. Because as towns and cities go underwater, as wildfires ravage our communities, we’re going to pay. And we have to decide whether we’re going to pay to react, or pay to be proactive.”
