Film and singing star Bette Midler offered an apology to Caitlyn Jenner this weekend after coming under fire for a tweet she sent out about the LGBT icon.
I Am Cait was cancelled last week after two seasons of exploring Jenner’s transition and new life as a woman. Midler decided to mark the occasion with this now-deleted tweet asking whether the show’s cancellation meant that Jenner would now go back to being a man.
Midler’s tweet created an online firestorm from those who called her transphobic and out of touch.
You’re better than this transphobic “joke” https://t.co/SAdX3ZJXB5

I hope @BetteMidler apologizes for her terrible transphobic comments and takes the time to educate herself on trans people’s rights/dignity

Wow. This is so disappointing coming from someone who’s been an “ally” to the community. https://t.co/GASkQxeUk4

Someone is defending Bette Midler’s seriously transphobic comment in the mentions of someone I know by noting “she’s a gay icon!” #silentT

Delete your transphobic mindset. https://t.co/8luVy2ukVv

Eventually, Midler offered apologies for her remark:
DEAR FRIENDS @HRC, WHOM I HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED. SORRY LAST TWEET OFFENDED. AN IDLE MUSING. I SEEM TO HAVE MISREAD THE TEMPER OF THE TIMES.
