Chief of Staff John Kelly Reportedly ‘Blew Up’ at Trump and Threatened to Quit Recently
It has been reported for a while now that there is tension between President Donald Trump and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. Earlier this week, a report came out that the president was sick of being “told no” by Kelly and just decided to stop telling his chief of staff anything, leaving Kelly to find out about Trump’s surprise announcements like everyone else.
In a new Axios story out today, Kelly was apparently so fed up with Trump at one point that he lashed out at POTUS late last month while saying he was going to resign.
“Kelly blew up at Trump in an Oval Office meeting that day, and while walking back to his office muttered he was going to quit,” Axios’ Jonathan Swan stated. “Sources said it was not related to the David Shulkin firing that happened the same day.”
A senior administration official told Swan that “calling it a threat” was likely a bit strong, claiming that Kelly was mostly just “venting frustration.”
Per Swan, though, his sources have said that Kelly packed up some personal belongings, allies of his had to go calm him down, and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen “came over to talk him off the ledge.” Swan also noted that Kelly has threatened to quit more than once since taking over the CoS post.
