Following the cancelation of his rally in Chicago tonight, Donald Trump appeared on Hardball to talk to Chris Matthews. Matthews really hammered Trump on a number of things, expressing with conviction that he understood how and why protesters and people with anti-Trump sentiments could be feeling so angered by the things Trump has been saying.
Trump spoke calmly and in a measured way, saying he understands that people “need the right to protest” and “that’s fine” with him, which doesn’t mesh with his previous comments on the matter. He also said race shouldn’t matter when it comes to politics or rallies, which also contradictory to past statements.
After Matthews brought up the racial element of Trump’s speech and why that might incite protests like the ones that happened tonight, Trump expressed surprise, saying, “We shouldn’t be restricted from having rally here because of ethnic makeup or anything like that. I’m somebody that feels strongly it shouldn’t make any difference. You usually feel that, too; that’s why I’m surprised you’re bringing this up because it shouldn’t matter.”
Following that, Matthews really went in, saying, “I just believe you could have predicted this. That’s all I’m saying. You could have predicted this.”
Trump argued that he shouldn’t have to be able to predict these things.
