CNN Debate Gets Heated as Stephen Moore Bashes Fed Chair: ‘Most Ridiculous Thing I’ve Ever Heard’

The Dow Jones slide currently has some economists on edge. And Wednesday on CNN, a debate over some of the Trump administration’s economic moves — including one they’ve already made and one they’re currently mulling — grew more than a little heated.

Appearing on At This Hour with Kate Bolduan, informal Trump economic advisor Stephen Moore and CNN analyst Rana Faroohar butted heads over corporate tax cuts.

“You all poured kerosene on that [fire] with the corporate tax cuts,” Foroohar said. “Corporations brought back not nearly as much money as the president said they were going to. Almost none of it went on to main street. It all went into share buybacks. And now companies are doing great, but real Americans haven’t felt it. So we have a bubble in the market. So the Fed has to ask.”

Moore disagreed.

“I don’t think anybody thinks that corporate tax cuts have hurt the economy,” Moore said.

“Oh my gosh,” an exasperated Foroohar said.

“This has been the strongest year for the real economy in terms of jobs, in terms of GDP growth, in terms of the lowest unemployment rate, in terms of manufacturing,” Moore said. “This has been a great year for the economy. And that was triggered in no small part, Rana, because of the tax cut we passed exactly a year ago.”

Bolduan then asked Moore about the reports that President Donald Trump has talked about wanting to fire Fed chair Jerome Powell. Moore didn’t advocate for that move, but he didn’t exactly go to bat for Powell either.

“I think Powell has been incompetent so far,” Moore said. “I think every move he has made has caused a massive slump.”

Foroohar ripped the idea of giving Powell the axe.

“If you talk about firing Jay Powell, you automatically make the entire thing political,” she said. “It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.”

Bolduan did not offer a take on the economic. But at segement’s end, she was convinced of one thing:

“I’m bullish on getting you guys off my show right now,” she said.
