CNN Reporter Impersonates Hunter S. Thompson to Interview O’Malley For Some Reason
With only four days to go before the first Democratic debate in Las Vegas, CNN turned its pre-debate coverage to 11 on Friday by channeling the late gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. At least, that’s what Being Moody host Chris Moody tried to do when he interviewed former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley dressed as actor Johnny Depp‘s take on Thompson from the 1998 film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
The premise technically makes sense as the upcoming debate will by broadcast by CNN from Las Vegas. Instead of sitting down with the presidential candidate, Moody decided to stage a hitchhiking scenario reminiscent of the film and Thompson’s book of the same name. Cue the pseudo-drugged up narration, a quick collage of cuts, a convertible mounted with GoPro cameras and terribly awful bat graphics.
Otherwise, it’s just an interview. The pair discussed everything marijuana legalization to college debt. O’Malley also spent most of the exchange hyping his past experience in the local and state-level executive branch, current campaign platforms, and preparations for the debate on Tuesday. At least Moody had some fun with O’Malley, despite “horribly impersonating” a renowned writer. (His own words, not mine.)
The least CNN could have done was spend just a tad bit more money on the segment’s special effects…
