CBS Dallas reports that Pizza Patrón, a southwestern pizza chain, will offer free pizza to anyone who orders their food in Spanish.
The promotion, called “Pizza Por Favor,” will run on June 5th between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time, and will award customers a free large-sized pepperoni pizza for the Spanish-speaking deed.
The chain previously generated controversy in 2007 when they accepted Mexican Pesos as payment, garnering the attention of everyone from Stephen Colbert to Fox News.
The company said in a press release that this new “Pizza Por Favor” promotion is an effort to honor the “positive force of change immigrants have made in communities throughout America.”
Uh-oh! Cue the conservative outrage.
The English-as-official-language debate has subsided in the last year, with only a few passing mentions from the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. But perhaps this little story will awaken the Tom Tancredos of the right to come out and condemn this popular southwestern pizza chain.
This begs the question: How long until throngs of people in American flag-print shorts and “Welcome to America, Now Speak English!” tee shirts show up and protest outside their local Pizza Patrón?
