Democratic Rep.: If Trump Keeps Making ‘Outlandish Claims’ Then ‘He Needs to Know He Will be Exposed’
— New Day (@NewDay) March 9, 2017
Appearing on CNN’s New Day this morning, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) spoke out against the White House for what he feels is their attempt to bury President Donald Trump’s “spurious claim” that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump’s phones prior to the election.
Regarding the administration’s request that Trump’s evidence-free allegations against his predecessor be investigated by Congress, Schiff — the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee — made it known that whatever is found (or not found) will be made public.
“I think what Sean Spicer and the president wanted was to take this spurious claim and try to bury it in a closed hearing in the intelligence committee,” Schiff stated. “We’re not going to allow that to happen. We’re going to air this very publicly.”
He continued, “If the president is going to make outlandish claims like this in the future he needs to know he will be exposed and high-ranking people within the US government — like the director of our intelligence agencies and the FBI — will be forced to say the President wasn’t telling the truth.”
Schiff further added that while Trump will be confronted on this, he will make more unfounded claims in the future and that it won’t just hurt him, but it will hurt the credibility of the United States.
