Emcee Shocks Cannes Audience by Making Rape Joke to Woody Allen
Woody Allen is at the Cannes Film Festival for his new film Café Society, and one of the very first jokes from the emcee kicking off the festival earlier was a rape joke directed at Allen.
The elephant in the room at Cannes, so to speak, is the accusations from his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow, which her brother Ronan Farrow brought up in a column today about how the media simply won’t ask him about the allegations and how it continues to be overlooked by people looking to praise the iconic director.
Well, according to multiple reports from Cannes, comedian Laurent Lafitte––the master of ceremonies––welcomed Allen with this joke:
“It’s very nice that you’ve been shooting so many movies in Europe, even if you are not being convicted for rape in the U.S.”
There were reportedly lots of audible gasps in the room.
The likely reference there is to Roman Polanski and his rape conviction many years ago.
