GOP Congressional Candidate John Koster: ‘The Rape Thing’ Does Not Justify Abortion

Several conservative politicians have come under fire this year for making controversial remarks about rape and abortion, and Washington congressional contender John Koster may very well join the club, as he just stated that “the rape thing” is no excuse for abortion because it merely puts “more violence onto a woman’s body.”

“But on the rape thing, it’s like, how does putting more violence onto a woman’s body and taking the life of an innocent child that’s a consequence of this crime, how does that make it better?” Koster told liberal activist group FUSE at a fundraiser this week.

Koster’s remarks echo those of a fellow Republican in Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock, who caused a stir last month when he said, “I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is, uh, something that God intended to happen.” The comment prompted a media firestorm, prompting Mourdock to release a statement on the matter:

“God creates life, and that was my point. God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that he does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick.”

As far as Koster goes, the GOP hopeful is strict on sex offenders, according to his campaign manager, Larry Stickney, who told CBC that Koster pushed for harsher laws on sex offenders while working in the state legislature:

“To imply that he’s cavalier about the issue is preposterous.”

Koster remained mum on whether women in danger of losing their lives should terminate their pregnancies and mentioned “the rape thing” once again:

“When a mother’s life is in danger … I’m not going to make that decision…Incest is so rare, I mean, it’s so rare. But the rape thing, you know, I know a woman who was raped and kept her child, gave it up for adoption. She doesn’t regret it. In fact, she is a big pro-life proponent.”
