Heather Heyer’s Mother Presents the ‘Best Fight Against the System’ Award at the VMAs (UPDATED)
The MTV Video Music Awards are happening tonight, and Heather Heyer‘s mother will be on to present the Best Fight Against the System award.
Ever since Heyer was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville, Susan Bro has spoken about how she will uphold her daughter’s mantle by speaking against bigotry and racial hatred. Much of Bro’s effort has gone towards the Heather Heyer Foundation, the organization she recently launched to help proponents of social justice.
Bro confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that she will speak during tonight’s musical festivities. The Best Fight Against the System award celebrates activism for causes like racial equality, LGBT rights and environmental justice.
Bro said she was skeptical when MTV first reached out to her, but she decided to speak after considering how large an impact her daughter’s death had on the country.
“I didn’t realize how many people were paying attention. But now I’ve realized this is bigger than Heather, this is bigger than me. This is something that touches people everywhere, the idea that you can stand up and be counted, that you have it within you to be that hero, so I feel like I have an obligation to share that.
“I want to make her death count. We’re not going to waste this. I would never give up my child willingly. If she had to die, at least we’re going to serve a purpose with it.”
Tonight’s nominees for Best Fight Against the System award are:
Logic ft. Damian Lemar Hudson – “Black SpiderMan”
The Hamilton Mixtape – “Immigrants (We Get the Job Done)”
Big Sean – “Light”
Alessia Cara – “Scars To Your Beautiful”
Taboo ft. Shailene Woodley – “Stand Up/Stand N Rock #NoDAPL”
John Legend – “Surefire.”
The show begins at 8:00 p.m. EST.
UPDATE – 10:50 p.m. EST: In her speech, Bro applauded all six nominees and asked the audience to join together and spread positive social change.
