The Trump White House unleashed a bizarre animated video styled after the adult cartoon Rick and Morty, a day after one of the franchise’s creators described how President Donald Trump helped, in part, to inspire his spin-off show’s eccentric fictional president.
The video, shared by the White House on social media, depicts Trump and Vice President JD Vance piloting a flying saucer while fleeing a winged demon through space.
It also features Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer removing his face to reveal a robot underneath, border czar Tom Homan dressed as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent (CBP) arresting actual aliens, floating MAGA hats and references to the president’s favorite drink, Diet Coke.
The clip was quickly bashed online by MAGA detractor Marjorie Taylor Greene and liberal commentator Harry Sisson:
The White House post arrived the same day that the Rick and Morty creators expanded its universe with President Curtis, a new Adult Swim spin-off centered on the show’s commander in chief.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, series co-creator Dan Harmon said real-life presidents inevitably influenced the writing of the character, including both Trump and former commander in chief Barack Obama.
“The conversations about Obama and Trump were inevitable,” Harmon told The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. “Curtis has a naïveté that you could overlap with Trump, who is like, ‘I’m an outsider, and I consider this job simple, and I don’t care about the bureaucracy of it.’ On the Obama side, it’s the charmer and the guy who gets organic joy in being liked – that whole rock star aspect of Obama.”
“But mostly just more legendary aspects of presidents from the past, all Serpentor’d into a test tube baby that then becomes our version of maybe Martin Sheen in West Wing, where it’s our fantasy president, warts and all,” he added.
The spinoff premiered Sunday following the season nine finale of Rick and Morty and has already been renewed for a second season after its announcement at San Diego Comic-Con.
Harmon and co-creator James Siciliano said they deliberately limited appearances by Rick and Morty in the first season to allow the new series to establish its own identity before exploring larger crossovers.
“If the show has a life of its own, then we can go Dick Wolf nuts with the crossovers,” Harmon said, adding that the creative team hoped to “earn that.”
