Pat Toomey Wins the Pennsylvania Senate Race
In one closely watched local contest Tuesday, Democrats stand to pick off a Senate seat from Pennsylvania. The incumbent conservative Republican Pat Toomey is wrapping up his first term as U.S. Senator by defending his seat against Democrat challenger Katie McGinty.
As of Monday afternoon, FiveThirtyEight said that the race leaned in McGinty’s favor, giving her 60.3% chance of picking up the seat. Meanwhile, RealClearPolitics’ average of recent polls gave her a 2.0-point lead.
Like many down-ballot Republicans, Toomey has struggled to put some distance between himself and the man at the top of the ticket. He has repeatedly refused to endorse Trump (though, incongruously, he did congratulate his Democrat colleague Tim Kaine when he joined Clinton’s ticket).
The polls in Pennsylvania close at 8 p.m. eastern time. We will update with the reported results as soon as they come in.
UPDATE – 1:19 A.M. ET: Toomey is now projected to win his race:
