John Oliver Breaks Down President Trump’s ‘Weird, Noticeably Soft Spot’ For Russia
In just his second episode back on air this season, John Oliver devoted his deep-dive segment Sunday night to the longstanding connections between the Trump administration and the Russian Federation. While the HBO late night comedian cautioned, “there is no hard proof yet of direct link between Trump and Moscow,” the evidence of relationship is substantial; as Oliver noted pointedly, “the [General Michael] Flynn debacle is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Oliver also focused much of the desk segment on the history of Russian President Vladimir Putin himself; Oliver said, “from the beginning of his Presidency he has been shrouded in accusations of corruption.” Last Week Tonight broke down many of the lengthy ways in which Putin is regularly praised as the luckiest of heroes in his home nation, a legendary figure who finds rare sea vases on scuba expeditions, and has pop songs written in his honor. “Maybe the guy has a rabbit’s foot. Yes, a freshly severed one, but still, he’s got one,” Oliver joked.
“Trump is fixated with getting along with Russia,” offered Oliver at one point, and after playing a clip of Trump being interviewed by Bill O’Reilly in which the then-candidate defended his pal Putin at length, Oliver said simply, “That is fucking embarrassing.” He furthered by outlining the ways in which Russian state-controlled media tried to convince its people that the American election was rigged in an effort to prove that real democracy can not exist anywhere in the world.
