Michael Phelps Admits His Past Behavior Stemmed From Not Wanting ‘To See Another Day’

Tomorrow, we will be exactly 100 days out from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. To mark the occasion, the Today Show is going to have a bunch of Olympics-themed segments and interviews during a party on their plaza. Among those interviewed in advance was Michael Phelps, the American swimmer who has had a troubled past.

Matt Lauer sat down with him recently and a teaser for that interview was aired on the show today.

The pair spoke about Phelps’ mother, who expressed public concern for her son following his arrests for DUI. Phelps admitted he thought she was probably just happy he was alive.

“Honestly, I sort of, at one point, just — I felt like I didn’t want to see another day.”

He did live to see another day, though, and will be participating in his fifth Olympic Games in 101 days. Tune in tomorrow to see the full interview and hear how he overcame his demons.
