The planned programming on Morning Joe went swiftly out the window Tuesday as President Trump launched his most ferocious broadside to date against his Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
In a flurry of tweets, Trump called out Sessions by name calling him “weak” for not investigating Hillary Clinton more aggressively after he took office. Setting aside how insane that idea would even be — the tweet underscores the complete breakdown in their relationship.
So of course Morning Joe had a field day.
“How long do you sit there and take this and what does it say about you if you’re willing to be publicly humiliated by the president day after day like this?” asked show regular Julie Pace.
Fair question? — to answer, co-host Mika Brzezinski took out the sharpest knife, pointedly noting that Trump was treating Sessions and some of his former closest allies like “Rosie O’Donnell.”
The former talk show host and Trump have a long and contentious history. In past years Trump has called her fat, a loser, dumb and obnoxious — among many other colorful things.
Rosie is crude, rude, obnoxious and dumb – other than that I like her very much!

“Big picture, Joe,” she said. “It feels like he’s treating Sessions and many others along the way in this administration like Rosie O’Donnell.”
… I think I just spit out my Morning Joe.
The moment provoked stunned silence on set (or maybe a delayed ear piece) but Scarborough eventually responded.
“He doesn’t understand that when he gets into a battle with let’s say Rosie O’Donnell, back in 2005, 2006 and they’re insulting each other back and forth, he still is in that mindset,” said Joe. “He doesn’t understand that when he’s in Washington D.C. and he is fighting his Attorney General and he is fighting Bob Mueller and he is fighting James Comey this isn’t a media game.”
“Even Rosie O’Donnell would say that — this is not a game,” he ended with a flourish.
