NCAA Athlete Kicked Off Team for Calling Mo’ne Davis a ‘Slut’

It feels like every week some loud-mouthed person learns the hard way to think before you tweet.

This week’s example is Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania first baseman Joey Casselberry, who thought it wise to tweet his negative opinion of female Little League World Series star pitcher Mo’ne Davis by calling her a “slut.”

“Disney is making a movie about Mo’ne Davis? WHAT A JOKE,” he wrote of the 14-year-old athlete’s Disney Channel movie. “That slut got rocked by Nevada,” he derisively referred to her loss to Nevada in the World Series. The tweet was screencapped before being deleted:

After outraged responses mounted, Casselberry apologized in a series of now-deleted tweets.

“An example that one stupid tweet can ruin someone’s life and I couldn’t be more sorry about my actions last night,” he wrote. “I please ask you to [f]orgive me and truly understand that I am in no way shape or form a sexist and I am a huge fan of Mo’ne. She was quite an inspiration.”

But the Huskies dismissed him from the Division II baseball team, notifying the world via Twitter:

The school also apologized to Davis herself:

Casselberry’s personal Twitter account has been deactivated.

UPDATE — Mon., March 23, 2015, 3:15 p.m. ET: Mo’ne Davis accepted Casselberry’s apology and is a better person than all of us. She also asked the school to reinstate his eligibility for the baseball team. See how that went here.
