NY Attorney General Invokes Freedom of the Press to Lament ‘Sad’ Gawker News
The Attorney General of New York, Eric Schneiderman, today lamented Gawker filing for bankruptcy and invoked freedom of the press.
Gawker filed for bankruptcy as a result for losing in court to Hulk Hogan (in a case that was funded by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Peter Thiel) and being ordered to pay up.
Schneiderman tweeted this out earlier today:
Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our nation. Like them or not, sad to see NYC media giant @Gawker forced to the brink.
— Eric Schneiderman (@AGSchneiderman) June 10, 2016
Now, a few commenters took issue with Schneiderman’s comment––some because of their feelings about Gawker, others because of Schneiderman being part of an inquiry into climate change deniers:
@AGSchneiderman @Gawker Yeah, it's not like they denied climate change was real, right?

@AGSchneiderman @Gawker They broke privacy laws, fuckstick. As an attorney general, you should know that.

@AGSchneiderman @Gawker As opposed to freedom of the press re: climate change, which you reject?

Trial by Jury is also a cornerstone of your nation. Six jurors and a judge agreed @Gawker weren't doing press. @AGSchneiderman

@AGSchneiderman does freedom of the press include climate change scepticism? @Gawker

@AGSchneiderman @Gawker it almost looks like NYC AG is defending wealthy companies over private individuals rights. Who would have thought?
