Oregon ‘Militia’ Members Reportedly Warned Authorities That Wildlife Refuge is Rigged With Traps

PicMonkey Collage - MalheurHarney County is not out of the woods just yet. Though the Oregon standoff came to an end Thursday, now is the time where the cleanup begins. In the case of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge though, that could end up being a dangerous task.

The final four members of Ammon Bundy‘s armed mob gave up their 41-day protest against the federal government, but a report from Reuters suggests that they might have left behind booby traps throughout the building before surrendering to the FBI. “They spoke to us about booby traps. We don’t know how sophisticated or what kind,” an anonymous law enforcement official reportedly said.

Beyond the weapons the militia members carried to the refuge on their own, new concerns revolve around the stockpile of materials that had been previously left by federal officials to perform controlled fires on the property. The official advised extreme caution around the area because the material could have been repurposed into explosives.

Sheriff David Ward gave a press conference last night to debrief locals on the standoff’s conclusion, where he implored that Harney County and the federal government learn from the experience to foster cooperation and understanding. FBI officials who handled the standoff in recent weeks were also in attendance, and special agent Greg Bretzing said that they would deploy technicians to disarm any traps and help with the cleanup.
