The Waller County District Attorney announced Monday it was bringing in an outside prosecutor to oversee the investigation into the Sandra Bland case.
“There are many lingering questions regarding the death of Sandra Bland,” DA Elton Mathis said, via the Houston Chronicle. He added that “any federal agency is welcome to come to Waller County,” as many have wanted the Justice Department to intervene.
Sugar Land defense attorney Lewis White is expected to lead an oversight committee. The investigation concerns both the behavior of arresting officer Brian Encinia, who is seen in a dash cam video getting into an altercation with Bland after pulling her over for failure to signal, and Bland’s mysterious death in a prison cell three days later, which the coroner has ruled a suicide.
Mathis has been accused in the past of racially-motivated prosecutions.
