Haaretz reports that Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif was responding to a false story that has been circulated by AWD News. The article reported that Israel’s former defense minister, Moshe Ya’alon, recently threatened to nuke Pakistan if it sends ground troops to Syria to do battle with ISIS.
New York Times notes that the website featured other questionable stories on their site recently, not the least of which is one with the headline “Clinton is staging a military coup against Trump.” Furthermore, the story stated that Ya’alon was still the Defense Minister, when in fact, he left the department in 2013 and was replaced by Avigdor Liberman.
The Israeli Defense Ministry has refuted the story and Asif has faced online condemnation over his mistake.
