Poll: Majority Backs Nuclear Deal with Iran, Questions Effectiveness

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll found majority support for the Obama administration’s negotiations with Iran to stunt the country’s nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

Despite harsh criticism from a bipartisan coterie of lawmakers, the deal was supported by 59% of respondents, with 31% opposing. It even found plurality of support among Republicans, 47-43%.

However, the same amount expressed little confidence that deal will halt Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon, while only 37% believed it would be effective.

It should be emphasized that the deal has not been (and may not be) finalized, and that terms are fuzzy at this point, despite steady leaks from the negotiations. Here’s how the poll question was worded:

Support for a deal does not transfer to President Barack Obama; only 38% of respondents approved of his handling of Iraq. Secretary of State John Kerry has been the face of the Iran negotiations from the start.
