Ruth Bader Ginsburg Will Appear as the Washington National Opera’s Newest Diva

Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1)Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg trade in her robe for the dress of a duchess soon, when she takes the stage for an exclusive performance with the Washington National Opera.

Ginsburg has expressed a love of classic operatic in the past, and it was a passion she shared with her late friend, Antonin Scalia. According to NPR, Ginsburg will take appear as the Duchess of Krakenthorp in The Daughter of the Regiment, a romantic comedy composed by Gaetano Donizetti.

While Ginsburg’s appearance won’t involved any singing, the script has been modified so that she will speak about the virtues required to lead House Krakenthorp. NPR noted that several of the new lines make reference to Ginsburg herself, and her true career on the Supreme Court.

“Persons with open but not empty minds, individuals willing to listen and learn…Is it any wonder that the most valorous members … have been women?”

Artistic director Francesca Zambello asked Ginsburg to join the troupe for the show’s entire run, but she declined in favor of a single appearance on November 12. When asked why, Ginsburg answered that she couldn’t have “a day job and a night job.”
