Salon Goes on Firing Spree, Including Long-Time Editor

SalonLiberal web magazine Salon underwent a series of layoffs Tuesday amid increasing budget constraints, Politico reports.

A total of six staffers were fired in the shakeup, including long-time assistant managing editor Ruth Henrich. Henrich had been at Salon for nearly two decades.

“Salon Media Group took steps that we believe will put the company on a stronger path forward,” Salon CEO Cindy Jeffers said in a statement. “We made the difficult decision to reduce our staff, in addition to other budgetary cuts. We hope these steps will move us in the direction of profitability and align us more closely with our strategy.”

Former editor in chief Joan Walsh took to Twitter to mourn Henrich’s loss in particular.

Former Salon film critic Stephanie Zacharek didn’t hold any punches upon hearing the news.
