Struggling DEA Chief Michele Leonhart Expected to Resign
Just last week, Leonhart was grilled by lawmakers on Capitol Hill over the agency’s response to a Department of Justice inspector general report claiming DEA agents held “sex parties” with Colombian prostitutes who were hired by drug cartels.
Leonhart was repeatedly questioned by House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) over her claims that she was unable to fire anyone involves due to the bureaucratic nature of the agency. Leonhart maintained that, under the law, she cannot fire anyone or revoke their security clearance for wrongdoing — an assertion that Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike weren’t buying.
According to CNN, Obama Administration officials were angry with Leonhart for “appearing to resist federal rules relaxing enforcement on marijuana” as many states have now moved to legalize pot.
Update- 5:47 pm EST: Attorney General Eric Holder announced this afternoon that Leonhart will be stepping down next month.
