The White House has announced that Press Secretary Sean Spicer will hold an on-air meeting with the political press corps today.
The briefing will begin at 1:30 p.m. EST.
There was a lot of intrigue yesterday about how Monday’s press briefing was the latest in several off-camera gaggles that Spicer has been doing with the media recently. This interest had much to do with the new reports that Spicer will soon give up his role as Press Secretary in order to take over as head of the White House’s communications department. It is almost certain that Spicer will be asked to address these reports today.
It is possible that Spicer will also take questions today about the special elections now taking place in Georgia and South Carolina. The Georgia election has drawn particularly large amounts of attention, as President Trump is anxious to see Karen Handel defeat Jon Ossoff in the close race the two candidates are expected to see today.
Spicer is also likely to talk about the tragic death of Otto Warmbier on Monday night. The American student was returned to his parents in a vegetative state last week, after being detained in North Korea for over a year. Indications are that Warmbier died from complications of the coma he fell into during his imprisonment.
Other recurring topics that Spicer might address include the shooting of Steve Scalise, ongoing efforts to reform the American health care system, and Trump’s tweet where he seemed to confirm that he is being investigated for obstruction of justice.
