James Comer Sounds Like He Knows He’s Got Nothing on Biden

After investigating potential corruption by President Joe Biden for more than a year, Rep. James Comer (R-KY) appears to be coming to the realization that he has nothing.

Or maybe he’s known he has nothing for a long time and just didn’t care. After more than 200 appearances on Fox News in 2023, Comer has raised huge amounts of campaign cash. Whether that money will be used to run for a Kentucky U.S. Senate seat presently occupied by an octogenarian unpopular in MAGA world – who’s to say?

As Republicans were on the cusp of retaking the House of Representatives in November 2022, Comer told Fox News that under his looming stewardship, the number one priority of the Oversight Committee would be investigating Hunter Biden’s overseas business ventures. In subsequent months, Comer made bold claims and suggested that as vice president, Joe Biden took a $5 million bribe from Burisma, the energy company on whose board his son served. That claim was based on information relayed by an ex-FBI informant named Alexander Smirnov, who has since been indicted for lying about the bribery claim, which according to the Department of Justice, was proliferated by “officials associated with Russian intelligence.”

Comer had a rich target in Hunter Biden – a veritable failson whose greatest talent is an all-too-familiar racket for do-nothing D.C. scions: profiting off the family name. Hunter Biden did neither himself nor his father any favors by doing business with questionable figures abroad. Then again, if Democrats were so inclined to prod, a year-long investigation into Jared Kushner’s $2 billion windfall courtesy of the Saudi crown prince shortly after leaving the White House would likely yield even more unsavory nuggets that would make Hunter Biden blush with envy.

Appearing on Friday’s Hannity, Comer was reduced to touting a check Joe Biden received from his brother James Biden for $40,000, or about the cost of one year’s out-of-state tuition at Joe’s alma mater, the University of Delaware. Not exactly the motherlode a corrupt politician hopes to strike. Comer said that the money, which the Bidens say was a loan repayment, originated from a Chinese energy conglomerate that Hunter Biden pressured to pay up. The problem with the characterization of this aspect of Comer’s probe – along with his many other specious charges – is succinctly summarized here by the Washington Post’s Philip Bump, who has doggedly documented Comer’s rank dishonesty throughout this whole sordid ordeal.

Comer addressed his committee’s release of the transcript of Hunter Biden’s deposition, which took place on Wednesday. Rather than nail the president’s son on any one of the myriad explosive claims Comer and congressional Republicans leveled against Hunter Biden, they came up empty. The Kentucky lawmaker, who has made increasingly bold claims about Joe Biden’s alleged corruption, was left to baselessly complain to Sean Hannity that the younger Biden simply lied under oath during his deposition.

Tellingly, Comer told Hannity there isn’t much left to do besides hold public hearings with Hunter Biden and other witnesses the committee has already spoken with. The purpose? To let “everyone” decide if Hunter Biden is lying or not, perhaps make some criminal referrals, and – gasp – uncover the alleged “deep state” corruption that supposedly thwarted Comer’s investigation:

Now, what we’re trying to do is go to the next phase, have the public hearing, bring all the associates in, and let everyone see everyone’s side of the story and make a determination. But at the end of the day, we’re gonna try to hold this family accountable. We’re gonna try to have referrals. We gonna try to identify the people in the deep state that were part of the coverup ’cause remember, in addition to the Biden financial crimes, we also have the coverup by the deep state actors. We’re trying to hold everyone accountable. We’re trying to wrap this up. And I think that the deposition with Hunter Biden and the transcribed interview with Jim Biden were huge successes.

These are not the words of someone confident that he has uncovered criminal wrongdoing. They sound like a person who is acutely aware that he did not deliver the goods to justify the House’s ongoing impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden – let alone his impeachment. Undoubtedly, Republicans have a low bar for impeaching the president, so it’s certainly still on the table. But the fact is, Comer has flopped so spectacularly that whatever iota of shame House Republicans may still possess just might be enough to end the impeachment talk once and for all.
