A Livid Jamie Raskin Kicks Off Hearing Where Hunter Biden Made Surprise Appearance by Quoting Comer’s Media Hits
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) made his annoyance clear at the beginning of a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, quoting at length from several media appearances by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), in which his Republican colleague repeatedly said that Hunter Biden would be able to come to a public committee hearing.
And the drama was heightened by a surprise appearance from none other than Hunter Biden himself.
Biden is facing a contempt charge for refusing to comply with the committee’s subpoena to testify in a closed door hearing, insisting that he is willing to give that testimony in an open hearing instead.
To open the hearing, Raskin argued that “for the last 11 months, the chairman [Comer] has repeatedly refused offers from Hunter Biden, his attorney, to meet with the chairman and his staff and with members of this committee,” and listed several examples of letters back and forth from Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell, including one where Lowell was responding to Comer’s NewsMax interview “in which the chairman falsely claimed that he never got a response back to his original letter.”
“Mr. Biden’s attorney explained the chairman actually never responded to his offer to sits down and discuss the committee’s request, but stated that he remained available to have the discussion, but the chairman again completely failed to respond,” said Raskin.
Raskin then quoted another Newsmax hit in which Comer “stated Hunter Biden is more than welcome to come in front of the committee if he wants to clear his good name, if he wants to come and say, you know, there weren’t 20 shell companies, he’s invited today, we’ll drop everything.”
The Maryland Democrat quoted several other media hits by Comer, complete with some visual aids in the form of a large posterboard a staffer held behind him with Comer’s words quoted on it, when he was interrupted by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
“Mr. Chairman? Mr. Chairman? I have an inquiry. Mr. Chairman? Don’t we have House rules and committee rules regarding subpoenas and then rules about having hearings and having questions with witnesses?” said Greene.
“We do –” said Comer.
“– that must be followed — can you state the rules, Mr. Chairman?” Greene continued.
“We can just interrupt each other –” Raskin objected.
“Your time was expired –” Comer retorted as Greene continued to ask about the rules.
“The gentleman’s time has expired. Do any other members wish to be heard?” said Comer, attempting to move on, and then Raskin insisted he had had to “endure multiple interruptions.”
“You went over your five minutes but I’ll give you 30 more seconds,” said Comer.
Raskin wrapped up by accusing Republicans on the committee of having “pulled a bait and switch” and “changed the terms of their request” by “reject[ing] [Hunter Biden’s] offer or his acceptance of their offer and insisted that he now come and sit for a secret closed door deposition.”
“On December 6th, Hunter Biden’s lawyer reiterated that Hunter Biden was willing to accept the chair’s original request and once again offered to appear on December 13th or any other date in December to answer any question pertinent and relevant to the subject matter,” said Raskin. “He again raised concerns about closed door sessions. That’s what brings us to today, Mr. Chairman. He has materially, substantially, in good faith complied with what your requests were.”
“He complied with the subpoena? I don’t –” Comer began.
“We — we would –” Raskin attempted to answer, before Comer cut him off with the gavel and said “Your time has expired,” before recognizing Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).
