Axelrod Slams Trump’s ‘Jackass’ Act in New Hampshire Speech: ‘That Was a Really Horrible Exhibition’

CNN contributor David Axelrod eviscerated Donald Trump’s victory speech in New Hampshire after the former president defeated Nikki Haley in the state’s primary.

Haley is the last remaining challenger to Trump, who is leading by wide margins in the polls. Despite this, a defiant Haley vowed to keep running and is setting her sights on next month’s primary in her home state of South Carolina, where she trails significantly.

In his speech, Trump ripped Haley and at one point made an offhand comment about the dress the former South Carolina governor donned while addressing her supporters earlier in the evening.

On Wednesday’s OutFront on CNN, Reihan Salam of the National Review said Trump’s impulsive behavior could be offset by his campaign’s discipline.

“One thing that is important to keep in mind is that Donald Trump running in 2024 is markedly different than in 2016,” Salam claimed. “You have the improvisational Trump on the stump making that victory speech. But you also have the very disciplined Trump campaign… They were hitting Nikki Haley from the right on immigration and then hitting her from the left on Social Security.”

Axelrod responded by saying Trump’s campaign is unable to rein in the candidate.

“And I guarantee you that they did not say, ‘Go on out there and act like a jackass and go after Nikki Haley in really personal and sexist ways, humiliate Tim Scott,'” Axelrod said. “That was the improvisational Trump. The challenge for his campaign team is, they can do all the blocking and tackling well, and they are. But they can’t control him. That was a really horrible exhibition last night. And it only probably made Haley more determined to try and stay.”
