Chip Roy Goes Nuclear on Libertarian Witness Advocating For Due Process: ‘Killing Americans!’
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) lost it on CATO Institute VP Alex Nowrasteh during a House hearing on Wednesday, accusing Libertarians of “hiding behind a brand that is resulting in the death of Americans.”
Libertarians, including the CATO Institute, have been vocal critics in recent months of President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to deport and indefinitely imprison migrants overseas without any kind of due process.
Roy defended Trump’s immigration crackdown and cited the Americans who have been killed by illegal immigrants, a regular talking point of both the White House and the pro-Trump right.
“She’s one of dozens, hundreds, thousands of examples of Americans who are dead because of policies that were advocated for by the Biden administration and people parading around as libertarians,” Roy said, trying to move on to one of the other witnesses.
“Parading around as a libertarian? What does that mean?” shot back Nowrasteh.
“It means exactly what it means,” Roy said as the two began talking over each other. “It’s my time, not yours,” Roy insisted as Nowrasteh could be heard saying, “That’s a personal offense.”
“It’s my time. I don’t have any time to listen to libertarian crap that is killing Americans because that’s what you’re doing. And you’re hiding behind a brand that is resulting in the death of Americans,” Roy concluded, yelling at Nowrasteh.
Nowrasteh hit back, “That’s a heck of a thing to say to somebody, sir. That is totally false. I take exception to that.”
Roy insisted, “It’s true. And everybody in America knows it.”
Nowrasteh replied, “I’ve not killed anybody, sir, and that is really exceptional.”
Roy fumed, “You go talk to Alexis Nungaray and talk about her daughter no longer being with us.”
Nowrasteh hit back, “[It is] beneath you is an individual order to say that to somebody, sir.”
