Hillsdale College – a conservative, Christian liberal arts college in Michigan – likened the controversial new change of Cracker Barrel’s logo to the vandalism of statues during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots on Thursday.

“Same energy,” wrote Hillsdale College in a social media post, which showed the new Cracker Barrel logo and a vandalized statue of George Washington next to each other.

After conservative journalist Christopher Rufo called for a “massive pressure” campaign against Cracker Barrel for going “woke,” Hillsdale College declared, “Cracker Barrel is a beloved cultural icon, tied to the lifestyle and memories of truth-seeking Americans.”

“I wouldn’t go that far, it’s a chain restaurant,” replied Rufo.

Cracker Barrel’s stock plummeted by almost $100 million this week after the company changed its logo as part of an ongoing, poorly-received rebrand.

Much of the backlash came from conservatives, who accused the company of going “woke,” citing the new logo, Cracker Barrel LGBTQ+ Pride initiatives, and DEI policies.

“In college, I worked at @CrackerBarrel in Tallahassee. I even gave my life to Christ in their parking lot,” protested Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) in a social media post. “Their logo was iconic and their unique restaurants were a fixture of American culture. No one asked for this woke rebrand. It’s time to Make Cracker Barrel Great Again.”

The new logo also received criticism from Democrats, with the official Democratic Party social media page and California Gov. Gavin Newsom panning the unpopular redesign.
