Conservative author Dinesh D’Souza gave New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani a “culture lesson” on Tuesday over which foods were “acceptable” to eat with your hands after Mamdani posted a video eating rice without cutlery.

“My culture lesson for Mamdani: Eating with your hands is acceptable when it’s bread, naan or pizza. Not when it’s soup, meatloaf or mashed potatoes,” declared D’Souza in a social media post. “Indians sometimes eat rice with their hands in India, but it’s much more common in rural areas. In America, it’s considered gross.”

D’Souza also posted a photo of himself eating naan bread with his hands to emphasize the advice.

U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division, Harmeet Dhillon, also scolded Mamdani for eating rice with his hands.

“Mom sent me home from the weekend with daal and rice … which I’m heating and eating with a spoon — not like some performance artist LARPing philistine!” wrote Dhillon, who was born in India.

Mamdani received backlash from conservatives this week after he posted a video which showed him eating rice on a bench with his bare hands.

“Civilized people in America don’t eat like this,” complained Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX), who is also D’Souza’s son-in-law. “If you refuse to adopt Western customs, go back to the Third World.”

Ironically, in March, Mamdani also received backlash for eating a burrito on the New York subway with a knife and fork instead of his hands.

Former Republican congressman Jason Chaffetz launched into an impression of Mamdani’s eating habits on Fox News, Tuesday, mocking, “Hey, let’s put root beer in all the drinking fountains! Everything will be free! Look at how I eat my burrito with my fingers and trust me.”
