Joe Rogan torched squatter policies in cities like New York, saying they are “basically allowing people to steal other people’s homes.”
During a discussion on The Joe Rogan Experience with comedians Dave Attell and Ian Fidance, the topic turned to squatter laws and multiple viral videos reigniting debate on the subject. Among the videos referenced by the comedians is one of a Queens homeowner being arrested after changing the locks on her home. She accused a man of squatting there, while he claimed to have a lease.
In New York City, squatters have rights after 30 days.
“That. Is. Bananas,” Rogan said.
Fidance noted recent reports that there are more than 1,000 squatter situations in Atlanta, Georgia.
“A thousand is crazy. That means they know how to do it and they know the loophole, and you need to tighten that loophole up, you fuckheads,” Rogan said.
“People are so smart. They know how to jack the system,” Fidance said.
“100%, especially criminals and fraudsters,” Rogan said.
The comedian argued in favor of laws protecting tenants but accused cities like New York of going too far and essentially legalizing theft.
“It’s so crazy that in the name of protecting tenants, which is important, you don’t want a shitty landlord, yeah, you wanna protect tenants, but in the name of protecting tenants, you are, you’re basically allowing people to steal people’s houses.”
