Paul Pelosi Charged with Misdemeanor Hit-and-Run
Allison Haley, the District Attorney of Napa County, filed two charges against Pelosi, with the second being one infraction for an unlawful turning movement, according to The New York Post. The misdemeanor hit-and-run charge could result in a fine of $1,000 and a maximum county jail sentence of six months.
The incident occurred on July 3 around 2:30 p.m. in the town of Yountville, California, where prosecutors say Pelosi hit a parked Tesla. He left the scene, continuing to drive until his car reportedly broke down approximately one quarter of a mile away.
Pelosi told authorities he knew he had hit something but was unaware of what he struck.
Per a press release issued by the Napa Valley Sheriff’s Office, a witness said the 86-year-old slammed into the parked and unoccupied car, causing “major rear damage” and pushing the parked car’s right tire over the curb. He briefly stopped his convertible before driving away.
“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” a spokesperson for the Pelosi family said in a statement to The California Post. “Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.”
Pelosi had a 0.00 blood alcohol level, per a preliminary alcohol screening, though authorities requested Pelosi re-take a driving test.
A recent report by The New York Times reveals that Pelosi has had at least seven other traffic violations in the Bay Area over the last 13 years, including “going the wrong way down a one-way street speeding, and, on more than one occasion, driving through a red light.”
He has a history of car accidents, too.
In 2022, Pelosi was arrested for DUI after a car crash in Napa County. He was attempting to cross a California state highway when a Jeep struck his car. Pelosi’s blood alcohol content measured at .082 percent; California’s legal Blood Alcohol Concentration limit is .08 percent.
He pled guilty to the charge of Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Injury. Based on the plea deal, he was given summary probation for three years, a $1,732 court fine, five days in jail and forced to pay victim restitution, among a few other consequences.
And in 1957, a 16-year-old Pelosi flipped his sports car in a crash that killed his older brother, David. A patrolman reportedly said David had urged Pelosi to drive slower before the accident. Reports also indicate David was strangled by a neck brace he was wearing for an existing injury while Pelosi was trapped under the vehicle but managed to escape.
