House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said “everybody needs to calm down” when asked if he’ll do “his part” to certify the 2024 presidential election results even if former President Donald Trump loses on Tuesday.
Congress voting to certify election results is historically fairly ceremonial, but more than 100 Republican lawmakers supported objections to the results of the 2020 presidential contest, which Trump continues to baselessly claim was stolen from him. The same day that the lawmakers raised their objections saw pro-Trump rioters inspired by the then-president’s lies storm the Capitol in their own, more violent objection to the election results.
During a conversation with EWTN on Election Day in Pennsylvania, Johnson was asked if he’ll do his “part” in certifying the election results, even if Vice President Kamala Harris wins.
Johnson slammed Democrats and the media for going “crazy” after Trump mentioned he and the House Speaker have a “secret” while speaking in Madison Square Garden. He also said he’ll do his Constitutional duty no matter who wins this round.
“All this hyperbole and madness about, ‘Oh, they’re going to try to unwind the election.’ None of that is true. None of it. President Trump mentioned that we had a ‘secret’ while he was in Madison Square Garden and the secret is our telephone town halls. It’s not some ulterior motive. The media went crazy over that,” Johnson said.
The Republican leader boasted that he believes this election will be “too big to rig.”
“There’s just too much emotion, too much misinformation out there. Everybody needs to calm down, let’s do our civic duty, let’s have an American election and then it’ll be certified,” he said. “I think it’s going to be too big to rig, I think President Donald Trump is going to win today, and I think we’re going to win the Senate and the House, so we’re excited.”
