New Poll Shows Trump’s Approval Rating Cratering to the Party Implosion ‘Bush Line’

Quinnipiac University’s latest poll on President Donald Trump’s approval rating found the president hitting an all-time low and finally reaching what some pundits have dubbed “The Bush Line” – the point where a president’s low approval rating damages the party’s electoral future.

The poll, published Wednesday, found that only 32% of Americans approve of the job Trump is currently doing, while 58% disapprove. 10% did not have an opinion. The poll, conducted between July 23rd and the 27th of 963 registered voters, carries a margin of error of 4.1%.

“In today’s poll, Republicans (76 – 12 percent) approve of the way Trump is handling his job as president, with 12 percent not offering an opinion. Democrats (94 – 3 percent) disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president, with 2 percent not offering an opinion. Independents (67 – 22 percent) disapprove, with 11 percent not offering an opinion,” added the poll’s summary on the partisan breakdown of its findings.

Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell has long warned of Trump reaching the so-called “Bush Line.” Longwell, a longtime pollster and former GOP operative, wrote in March as Trump’s approval sat around 36%:

George W. Bush left office with a 32% approval rating. That was enough to cost Republicans two Prez elections, but more importantly left the party so weak that Trump was able to hijack it and turn it into something completely different. I want to see Trump at 32%. The Bush line.

She shared the Quinnipiac on Thursday and added, “That, my friends, is the Bush Line.”

CNN’s latest Trump approval rating poll has the president at 34%, while the latest AP-NORC poll found Trump at 33%.
