‘No, No, No, No’: Karine Jean-Pierre Defends Biden’s Youth Support After Doocy Accuses Him of Being ‘MIA’ on Protests
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended President Joe Biden’s standing with young voters after Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy accused the president of being “MIA” on campus protests.
Police action has been taken in multiple states where students have set up encampments to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and for their schools to cut all ties with Israel amid their strikes on the region. At Columbia University in New York, police emptied an administrative building that protesters occupied as part of their demonstration.
During a Wednesday press conference, Doocy claimed Biden had been “MIA” on these pro-Palestinian protests and not addressed reports of anti-semitism amid the demonstrations. The White House did previously condemn the Columbia University protest, calling some of the language used “Blatantly anti-Semitic, unconscionable, and dangerous.”
“I understand that President Biden historically has spoken very forcefully about antisemitism, but this week, he’s not. He’s MIA. Is he that worried about losing the youth vote with these protesters?” Doocy asked.
“I’m going to be mindful. You’re talking about youth vote. You’re talking about 2024,” Jean-Pierre said.
As Doocy tried to jump back in, Jean-Pierre continued.
“No, no, no, no. I — I have to say what I have to say and just give me a second,” she said.
The press secretary cited a number of policies young progressive voters support him on, including efforts to eliminate student debt.
She said:
The president has taken a lot of policy actions here that he knows that young people care about and a lot of those actions are popular with those young folks, whether it’s giving a little bit of breathing room with student debt relief — so we made announcement today, as a matter of fact, and we are going to continue to do that, because we think it’s important as families or as an American and you’re coming out of college and you want to build a family [and] buy a home, you have the opportunity to do that and not be crushed by student debt.
The president understands how important it is to deal with that issue. Climate change [is] something that young people really truly care about. One of the crises that the president said he came into having to deal with was the climate change crisis. This is a president who has taken more — who has taken aggressive, aggressive action to deal with climate crisis. You know, look, I can’t speak to youth voters or their support, but we’re going to do continue to take actions that we believe helps all Americans and all communities.
There has been increased talk among pundits about how campus protests and the issue of the country’s support for Israel will affect Biden in November with younger Democrats. There have been multiple protest votes in Democratic primaries in swing states as part of an effort to condemn Biden’s Israel policy. More than 100,000 voted “uncommitted” in the Michigan Democratic primary, which Biden still easily won.
Filmmaker Michael Moore took to CNN this week and predicted Biden will lose to Donald Trump if he does not change his Israel policy. Former Trump White House official Alyssa Farah Griffin echoed a similar point on Wednesday’s The View, saying “young progressives” could tank Biden’s campaign.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Doocy also asked Jean-Pierre is Biden wants a probe into whether “agitators” at the campus protests were backed by foreign entities. New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) pointed much of the blame for increased tensions at protests on “outside agitators,” and he said he wants to “look” into whether they are backed by foreign influences.
“We’re being told that there are professional outside agitators involved. We don’t know if they’re being paid to sow chaos by domestic folks or foreign entities. Does President Biden want his administration to find out who is funding some of these protests?” Doocy asked.
Jean-Pierre said local law enforcement would be dealing with the matter, but the FBI and Department of Justice will offer assistance.
“The DOJ and FBI is going to continue to offer support to universities and colleges with respect to federal laws, so that is something that the DOJ and FBI is doing,” she said. “As far as local organizations and what is all being reported on the ground, that is something that I’m [sure] that local law enforcement, I’m certain, is looking into.”
