‘Pathetic and Disgusting’: McGovern Slams Marjorie Taylor Greene, Says ‘It’s Really Rich to Get a Lecture on Civility’ From Her

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) ripped a floor speech by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Wednesday night, shortly before a censure vote.

The House debated whether to censure Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) for falsely pulling a fire alarm at the Capitol ahead of a vote in September. Bowman claims it was an accident, but Republicans are skeptical. He has pleaded guilty to one local criminal charge in connection with the incident.

During debate, Greene spoke in favor of censure, which is a public rebuke that carries no formal consequences. The Georgia lawmaker has previously said Bowman should be federally prosecuted in the same way the Department of Justice prosecuted those who rioted at the Capitol on January, 6, 2021. Greene has downplayed the riot and claimed those who tried to overturn the election results have been treated unfairly.

“Mr. Speaker, I urge all of my colleagues to vote for this censure resolution,” she stated on the House floor on Wednesday, while also invoking Jan. 6 defendants.

McGovern rose to rebut her remarks, noting the time she heckled President Joe Biden during a State of the Union address. He also noted affinity for those present at the Capitol on Jan. 6:

Mr Speaker, it is– it’s really rich to get a lecture from someone about civility, who stood on this House floor and screamed and interrupted the president of the United States during the State of the Union,” he replied, as his fellow Democrats applauded. “Or somebody who continues to circle the wagons and cheer on the insurrectionists who attacked this Capitol violently on January 6th. I was the last person off the House floor on that day, and I saw what happened. And for people to come down here and defend actions, it is pathetic and disgusting.

A motion to table the censure resolution against Bowman failed, setting the stage for a final vote on whether to rebuke him.

McGovern was in a fighting mood on Wednesday. In other floor remarks, he called the Bowman censure resolution “profoundly stupid.”
