Senate Candidate Praises Trump’s ‘Awesome Idea’ to Buy Greenland During Debate: ‘He’s a Deal Guy’
A contentious Pennsylvania GOP Senate primary debate was briefly disrupted by a non sequitur discussion about the U.S. possibly acquiring Greenland on Wednesday evening.
Former U.S. ambassador to Denmark under the Trump administration, Carla Sands, was asked about the subject.
Newmax TV hosted the debate, which was moderated by Greta Van Susteren.
Van Susteren asked Sands, “Ambassador Sands, when you were ambassador to Denmark, President Trump offered to buy Greenland from Denmark, what did you think about that?”
Sands endorsed the idea of scooping up the vast and mostly uninhabitable island from the Danes.
“[Trump] was the third U.S. president to make that suggestion, and I thought it was an awesome idea, because he’s a deal guy,” Sands responded. “And we know Denmark can’t afford to develop or defend Greenland.”
Sands went on to rip her primary rivals David McCormick and Mehmet Oz, who had just engaged in a verbal spat.
She accused both men of having “flip-flopped” on the issues as she portrayed herself as the one true “America first” candidate on stage.
The moment about Greenland appeared to come from out of the blue. Trump said he entertained the idea of buying the territory in 2019, he told reporters. It should be noted Greenland was not for sale.
“It’s just something we’ve talked about,” Trump said. “Denmark essentially owns it. We’re very good allies with Denmark. We’ve protected Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, so the concept came up.”
“Strategically, it’s interesting. And, we’d be interested. We’ll talk to them a little bit,” Trump also said. “It’s not No. 1 on the burner, I can tell you that.”
No deal between the two countries was ever struck.
Greenland is rich in diamonds, gold, iron ore, lead, zinc, uranium, and other elements and fossil fuels.
Contrary to what some might believe, the self-governing territory is mostly covered in ice, while Iceland, which is located to its east, is known for its lush green landscapes and mesmerizing mountains and volcanoes.
Unfortunately for the people of Pennsylvania, these and other interesting facts were not discussed during Wednesday’s debate.
