A new poll out Wednesday shows Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) in a near dead-heat with her primary challenger St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell.
The poll was published the day after Bush’s fellow “squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) became the first incumbent House Democrat to lose in a primary this cycle. The poll of 400 registered voters in Missouri’s first district showed Bell up 1 point, leading Bush 43 to 42 percent.
However, the poll carried a margin of error of 4.9 percent. The latest Mellman Group poll is a noted improvement from January for Bell, when he trailed Bush by 16 points. Eleven percent of voters remain undecided in the race, according to the poll.
USA Today noted the poll found “Bell also leads Bush in job performance and favorability ratings. Sixty-one percent of survey respondents gave Bell a positive rating on his job performance while only 49% gave Bush a positive rating. 60% of respondents are favorable towards Bush while 64% are favorable towards Bell.”
“But the pollsters found some signs that may benefit Bell as the Show Me State’s Aug. 6 primary date approaches. Among the most consistent primary voters — those who voted in three of the most recent primaries — Bell led Bush by 10 points, 49 percent to 39 percent,” added the Hill.
Missouri’s primary will be held on August 6th, when the race is certain to draw national attention.
