Trump Hits All-Time Low In Major Poll: ‘Dramatic Development’

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer asked the network’s political director David Chalian on Tuesday to weigh in on a “dramatic development”: a new Reuters poll showing President Donald Trump hit his lowest approval rating in the history of the poll.

“Another dramatic development unfolding. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that President Trump’s approval rating has now fallen to the lowest of his career. Only 33% approve of what he’s doing, 64% disapprove. How much will that affect the midterm elections in November?” Blitzer asked Chalian.

“An immense amount. I mean, this is the backdrop upon which this consequential midterm election season will take place. It is Donald Trump at historic lows in popularity,” Chalian replied, adding:

The unpopularity of the Iran war, high gas prices — all of that is giving Republicans some heart palpitations here as they’re going in. Now, they’ve done what they can do to try to mitigate this with redistricting. They expect to have more money to spend than Democrats do this fall. But none of that may actually thwart what a significant weight the president’s unpopularity is around Republicans heading into this fall midterm season.

Reuters reported on its new polling data and noted, “Just 33% of respondents in the four-day survey said they approved of Trump’s performance in the White House, while 64% disapproved. Trump’s approval rating, down from 35% in a poll that closed earlier this month and lower than at any point in his current term, has now tied the lowest level of his prior term reached in December 2017.”

The new polling also found Democrats with an edge over Republicans on the handling of the economy, the first time Reuters/Ipsos found that result in “about a decade.” “The latest poll showed 38% of voters think Democrats will handle the economy better, compared to 35% who prefer the Republican approach. Democrats are also seen as better equipped to manage the cost of living,” added the poll’s summary.

Trump’s approval rating has hit all-time lows in other recent polls. Quinnipiac University registered him at 32% in late July, the lowest finding in the poll’s history for Trump. In recent weeks, CNN polling had the president at 34%, while the latest AP-NORC poll found Trump at 33%.
