Trump Praises Hungary’s Viktor Orbán Same Day He’s Brutally Roasted In The EU Parliament As a ‘Useful Idiot of Russia And China’
Hungarian President Viktor Orbán received a hostile reception this week when addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France to kick off his country’s six-month turn presiding over the EU Council. Orbán, who has been in power since 2010, has been widely dubbed an authoritarian as he has cracked down on free speech and elections in his country.
Former President Donald Trump, also on Wednesday, praised Orbán while at a rally in Pennsylvania. “Viktor Orbán, one of the toughest leaders in the world. The press hates him, the say ‘he’s a tough leader.’ Well, you know, sometimes you need a tough leader,” Trump said of his ally, who he met with in July at his private home in Florida.
Moritz Körner, an EU parliament member from Germany, tore into Orbán in a floor speech following the Hungarian leader’s speech.
“What a speech, Mr. Orbán. What a speech. You say you want democracy and you brag about your majorities in the Hungarian parliament. Yet for years you only rule by emergency decree. Are you so afraid of democracy, Mr. Orbán? You say you are for national serenity. Yet you invite Chinese policemen to surveil the people in your country,” Körner said, directly facing Orbán.
“You say you want to stop migration, yet you let Russian spies into our Schengen system and call it national card. That is what you are doing. Mr. Orbán, you are not a patriot. You are just a useful idiot of Russia and China. That’s the reality. You say you want to fight for more economic competitiveness. Yet you keep introducing new company laws and taxes to drive European competitors out of your country,” Körner replied, adding:
You turned Hungary into a banana republic. You robbed your population and enriched your family and friends. Under your rule, Hungary has become one of the poorest and officially the most corrupt country in the EU. What a fraud. What a burden for your people. Mr. Orbán, please step down to make Hungary great again.
Körner’s speech quickly went viral online, as did others who took the opportunity to roast Orbán to his face. Below are some additional speeches, including from President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen:
