Latin Pop Star Retracts Endorsement of Trump After MSG Rally: ‘Puerto Rico Deserves Respect’

Popular Puerto Rican artist Nick Rivera Caminero, better known by his stage name Nicky Jam, retracted his endorsement of Donald Trump following the GOP presidential nominee’s controversial Madison Square Garden rally over the weekend.

On Wednesday afternoon, Caminero uploaded a video to his Instagram explaining that he can no longer publicly support Trump following a joke at the rally by Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe where he mocked Latinos and Puerto Rico.

“The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was what’s best for the economy in the United States, where a lot of Latinos live… a lot of immigrants that are suffering over the state of the economy,” Caminero said in Spanish while sitting in a luxury car. “With [Trump] being a businessman, I felt it was the right move.”

Caminero goes on to state that he would have never endorsed Trump if knew a “comedian would appear to criticize and talk badly about my [Puerto Rico]” at the rally. The star concluded, “That’s why I’m renouncing my support for Donald Trump and stepping away from any political conversation. Puerto Rico deserves respect.”

During Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally on Sunday, Hinchcliffe appeared on stage and claimed Puerto Rico was an “island of garbage.”

Previously back in September, Caminero appeared at a Trump rally where he endorsed the former president. However, Trump misgendered the artist by introducing him as a “hot” woman.
