Trump Continues Assault on Practice of Counting Votes After Election Day: ‘Totally Inappropriate’
President Donald Trump demanded that the 2020 presidential election winner be announced on Election Day despite the high probability of the final results taking longer than usual to verify.
Trump held a press scrum while leaving the White House on Tuesday for his campaign rallies, touting his support in multiple states. During his exchange with the media, the president offered this statement on how he wants the results to come in on Nov. 4.
It would be very, very proper and very nice if a winner were declared on November 3rd, instead of counting ballots for two weeks, which is totally inappropriate and I don’t believe that that’s by our laws. I don’t believe that. So we’ll see what happens.
As we previously noted, official vote counts have never been completed on the same day as Election Day. Certifying the results this year is bound to take an unusually lengthy period of time thanks to all of the complications posed by the coronavirus pandemic.
In recent months, Trump repeatedly attacked mail-in voting by falsely claiming that the practice facilitates massive voter fraud and widespread corruption of the electoral process. Millions of Americans intend to vote by mail this election, and many have already done so while casting their early ballots, including the president’s daughter and son-in-law.
