Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) tore into pro-Palestinian protestors on Tuesday after video of a Monday night rally in NYC showed some of the protesters chanting “resistance is justified.”
“During an anti-Israel hate rally in NYC, activists were on caught on video chanting: ‘Resistance is justified.’ Exactly what is justified?” the Democrat wrote on Twitter, adding:
-Hamas butchering and burning babies?
-Hamas cutting open the womb of a pregnant woman so that the fetus could be left hanging by an umbilical cord?
-Hamas abducting a Holocaust survivor? If you justify these medieval atrocities as “resistance,” you are not progressive. You are regressive.
You’re not a liberator. You’re an oppressor.
You are not a friend of freedom. You are its enemy.
Torres, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has tussled publicly with other members of the caucus including Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who recently wondered aloud at a rally “how many more killings is enough” for Torres in Gaza.
Asked to respond to Omar on CNN, Torres said, “I mean, I obviously resent those comments. You know, every casualty is a tragedy. Every war is a humanitarian crisis. But we have to keep in mind the causes of the war. Israel did not start the war. The war was imposed upon Israel by the barbaric terrorism of Hamas, which butchered 1,400 Israelis, including babies.”
Over the weekend, 19 people were arrested after police clashed with pr0-Palestinian protesters in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
“Officers were struck with flying debris which included eggs, fireworks and bottles. Officers responded to this disruptive behavior and attempted to regain order by taking into custody those responsible for these actions. In the course of doing so, the officer seen in the video is reacting to active resistance by criminals within the crowd. The NYPD encourages peaceful protests but will not condone our officers being subjected to any form of violence,” a police spokesperson told CBS New York.
